About Us

1950's five-and-dime store show classic kids toys

What is Binkley's?

Binkley’s is a 5 & 10 variety store that first opened its doors in Medford, NJ, in 1962.   The Medford store is the last surviving general store of the five original stores opened by the Binkley family.  In January 1995, the Binkley family sold their Medford store to the Cameron/Solimeo family.  William Cameron, his wife Gina, and their daughter Cassandra kept the local 5 & 10 tradition going until March 2020, when they sold it to me, Amy Federman.  I grew up in Medford Lakes, shopped at Binkley's as a kid, and my mother was the manager for many years, too!

A little history behind Five and Dime Stores:

In the early 20th century, Woolworth's was established by Frank Winfield Woolworth, a New York entrepreneur. This was the first American 5 & 10 store, which was located in the northeast in Pennsylvania and New York.  Five-and-dime stores were the precursor to modern-day discount stores.  They sold the best variety of inexpensive household items. From candy and toys to housewares and notions, these stores offered a little of everything.

Mr. Woolworth created the concept of purchasing items directly from the source, manufacturers, and setting the items at fixed prices from 5 cents to 10 cents.  The idea of fixed prices eliminated the need to haggle.

What are Binkley's Mission and Vision?

Binkley's is an institution in the Medford area community.  It is our mission to carry on the tradition of the 5 & 10 stores by offering the best possible variety of products with the best possible customer service.  On any given day, you will hear our customers say, "I knew Binkley's would have it!" which is why our one-stop shopping experience sets us apart from the competition.
